Part-timers on average earn $2,758 per course, about one-fourth of what tenured and tenure-track professors earn when their full salaries are divided by the number of classes they typically teach. Full-time contingent faculty members earn between $6,000 and $9,800 a course—about a third less than their tenured and tenure track colleagues.

The number of contingent faculty and the number of courses that they teach is always undercounted by institutions. I’ve worked at a dozen or more places in five states, and administrators can’t tell you how many contingent faculty they have.
