Gràcies a Boing-Boing he vist que es posarà en marxa una revista anomenada Journal of Serendipitous and Unexpected Results que té per objectiu exposar i posar en comú resultats que els científics troben de forma inesperada o sorprenent. Aquesta revista té el lema d’Issac Asimov “The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not ‘Eureka!’, but ‘That’s funny…'” (reconec que jo també he passat per aquí a vegades, tot dient “que curiós…!”.
Aquesta revista té previst tenir dues branques: la de ciències de la vida i la de ciències computacionals. En aquesta segona branca segur que al nostre grup de recerca tindrem moltes coses a publicar… sempre ens surten coses estranyes als càlculs. Del tipus que vol la revista: Articles published in JSUR discuss results that are unexpected or perplexing given conventional wisdom or that clearly negate a popular hypothesis.
El post de Boing-Boing és més interessant pels comentaris que s’hi fan que no pas pel propi post. Es tracta de publicar les coses que no han sortit? De dades negatives?
So by “serendipitous and unexpected” they mean “negative data”? Judging from their list of types of material, that seems to be the case, but it’s an odd way to phrase it. Biological research very often results in serendipitous or unexpected discoveries, and these are often significant, moreso than what this journal seems to be striving to present.
Però cal anar amb compte. Sigui el que sigui, siguin troballes estranyes o resultats negatius, han de ser replicables, tal com mana el mètode científic:
Unexpected and serendipitous results are only significant when they’re successfully replicated. The history of science is filled with eager scientists who report amazing discoveries and then fall flat on their faces. The cold fusion debacle comes to mind.
