The question of how we can measure and understand the usage and impact of digital content within the education sector is becoming increasingly important. Substantial investment goes into the creation of digital resources for research, teaching and learning and, in the current economic climate, both content creators, publishers as well as funding bodies are being asked to provide evidence of the value of the resources they’ve invested in.

But how do we go about defining value and impact? Which metrics should we adopt to understand usage? When is a digital resource a well used resource?

The survey split university websites into three categories — well performing, average performing and badly performing — based on five principles including accessibility, contact information, the availability of good feedback from students, the uniqueness of the website and the quality of insight into the campus experience.

universities spend money on improving their web presence as a waste. What do people expect: a quality web presence at no cost? As universities compete globally, a highly visible, quality website has become an essential aspect of their overall marketing strategy. Therefore it seems reasonable that they should invest in it accordingly. The design aspect is only the tip of the iceberg, in an organisation the size of a university you also need a suitable Content Management System (CMS) to handle all the content that comes, not only from the marketing people, but also from faculties, schools, research centres, etc.
