He vist que acaba de sortir el THE (Times Higher Educagion) World University Rankings 2011-12 – bé… només les 400 primeres universitats. Fa pocs dies que es publicar el QS Univ. Rankings, que feia parella amb el THE i que es van separar fa poc.
Gràcies al Inside Higher Education ja n’he vist un primer comentari, que em fa gràcia que inclou el verb “seduir”. I és que el tema dels rànkings sedueix, no hi ha res a fer! En aquest cas m’agrada especialment, perquè fins ara la metodologia del THE era la que, en la meva opinió, proporciona millor idea de la qualitat d’una universitat.
Aquest any la classificació dels primers llocs (sempre són els mateixos!) és Caltech, Harvard, Stanford, Oxford, Princeton, Cambridge, MIT, Imperial, Chicago i Berkeley. L’any passat el primer lloc l’ocupava Harvard.
La Universitat Pompeu Fabra ocupa un honrós lloc 186, seguida més enere de la UAB, UB, UAM, UV, UPC, UPV, UZ. No n’hi ha cap altra, d’espanyola, dins de les primeres 400. He de dir que s’ha baixat de nivell, ja que la UAB era la 142 l’any passat, mentre que la UPF era la 155. I no crec que sigui degut a cap tipus de crisi, que aquesta classificació reflexa la feina (al menys pel que fa a producció i qualitat) d’anys enrere.
De franceses també n’hi ha vuit, en particular la Universitat de Montpeller-2. Les petites universitats ho tenen difícil per sortir en aquesta classificació, encara que la UPF bé hi surt, sense ser gaire gran. Per cert, a cop d’ull la UPF és la 75a universitat europea.
El post de l’IHE fa algun comentari interssant, per exemple respecte a governança:
Governance matters: Who is governing whom? Who is being held to account, in which ways, and how frequently? Are the ranked capable of doing more than acting as mere providers of information (for free) to the rankers? Is an effective mechanism needed for regulating rankers and the emerging ranking industry? Do university leaders have any capability (none shown so far!) to collaborate on ranking governance matters?

The Top 400 outcomes will and should be debated, and people will be curious about the relative place of their universities in the ranked list, as well as about the welcome improvements evident in the THE/Thomson Reuters methodology. But don’t be invited into distraction and only focus on some of these questions, especially those dealing with outcomes, methods, and reactions.
Rather, we also need to ask more hard questions about power, governance, and context, not to mention interests, outcomes, and potential collateral damage to the sector (when these rankings are released and then circulate into national media outlets, and ministerial desktops). There is a political economy to world university rankings, and these schemes (all of them, not just the THE World University Rankings) are laden with power and generative of substantial impacts; impacts that the rankers themselves often do not hear about, nor feel (e.g., via the reallocation of resources).
Is it not time to think more broadly, and critically, about the big issues related to the great ranking seduction?

He estat mirant i d’Holanda hi ha 12 dins el top 200; no ho tinc clar com potser que hi ha universitats “petites” com Erasmus Rotterdam o Maastricht dins el top 200, i no l’UAB o l’UB. Probablement els hospitals (de R’dam i M’tricht) tenen gran influencia en aquest respecte.
