Acaba de sortir la revista Journal of Unsolved Questions (JUNQ – cal notar que “junk” en anglés és “escombraria o deixalla”), que pretèn publicar resultats negatius dels experiments científics, és a dir, els nuls. Potser a primera vista sembla una bestiesa, però els resultats nuls es troben sovint…
Besides publishing articles and open questions, we want to create a platform for reflecting on the day-to-day business in science from a meta-perspective: Is the current scientific practice optimal for the gain of knowledge? How could we overcome prejudices that hinder objective judgement in research? What is the philosophical foundation of sci- ence? These are questions every scientist should ask him- or herself, we want to provide the facilities to do so. Various formats (lectures, discussions, essays in the Journal, contributions to other journals etc.) are utilized to promote such deliberations.
JUnQ is a new platform to gather ‘null’-result research. It is a medium to communicate projects, which just didn’t work, ambiguous data without exaggeration and unfinished investigations, which raise more questions than they answer
Cal dir que en el curs de la meva recerca, començada a final dels anys 70, he obtingut molts de resultats poc interessants o que no portaven a be res. És a dir, resultats “zero”, no publicables. No pas erronis, senzillament es tractaven (i es tracten) d’experiments numèrics que no aportaven res al coneixement científic.
Un bon exemple és l’article Something went wrong, que tracta d’un estudi inútil de dinàmica molecular d’una molècula relativament senzilla. però potser per la proximitat temàtica amb els ful.lerens, ben estudiats al nostre grup, m’ha agradat Egg-shaped Fullerene Type and Dragon-Type Cages Unsuitable for Forming Donor-Acceptor Complexes with Noble Gases.
Crec que posaré aquesta revista al nivell dels Annals of Improbable Research, que atorga els Premis Antinobel, i potser fins i tot el Journal of Universal Rejection (JUR), una revista que rebutja tots (tots!) els articles que s’hi envien. No sé, francament, si agafar-m’ho en broma o en sèrio!
