El concepte d’Univerciutat al Regne Unit

Al Times Higher Education hi ha un article interessant titulat ‘Univer-cities’ told to learn some home truths on es remarca un cert retorn de les unversitats britàniques que no són a Londres a una missió de suport al seu entorn més local. En un debat que va tenir lloc a finals d’abril, s’hi va dir que

The Tony Rich Lecture and Debate, held at the University of London by the Association of Heads of University Administration on 26 April, heard that just 4 per cent of institutions consider their locality to be a mission priority, with almost a third not seeing any geographical area as part of their mission.

John Hogan, registrar at Newcastle University, said that his institution went “hand in glove” with the local city, and that more institutions should consider themselves a “univer-city”

Taking the example of Imperial College London, he said: “Imperial is a fantastic institution, but if it closed, would London notice? Probably not. “But if Newcastle closed, or Northumbria, Durham, Teesside or Sunderland [universities] closed, it would be a catastrophe for the local and the bigger region, because there’s not a lot else going on in the North East.”

Meanwhile, David Allen, registrar of the University of Exeter, said that for a time universities had lost touch with their communities, but recently they had started to re-engage in “powerful and beneficial ways”.

Però els comentaris a aquest article del THE són de top tipus. Alguns qüestionen que una universitat aporti gaire res més que una gran empresa. De fet, alguns comentaris afirmen que una unviersitat distorsiona una societat. Però el que em fa més gràcia és aquest:

Is it healthy for universities to be full of academics. I suspect it gives a skewed outlook on society similar to a church. Which strangely enough is where universities were born.

Més enllà de la comparació amb l’Església, sí que és veritat que una ciutat que té una universitat passa a ser perturbada en una certa direcció. El que importa és que sigui en la direcció correcta: en la de la crítica del coneixement, en la seva creació, en la innovació, etc.

En tot cas, una entrada rellevant del THE i un debat britànic que potser és aplicable a Catalunya. Perquè Barcelona hi juga un paper semblant al de Londres a Gran Bretanya, oi?
