M’ha semblat interessant l’entrada de l’Inside Higher Education titulada What is a University Today? que comenta les funcions de les actuals universitats del sistema americà d’educació superior (i com els recursos es van concentrant en unes poques universitats).

In the range of services offered, Harvard is not unique. The University of Texas at Austin has 18 degree granting academic units, an astronomical observatory, 20 libraries, including the LBJ Presidential Library, four museums, 13 on-campus and 25 off-campus research centers, laboratories, and incubators, an online high school, and summer institutes, lifelong learning, continuing education, and at least eight continuing professional and executive education programs.
Museus, institut de secundària online, escoles d’estiu… interessants per copiar (bé, és clar).
I diu que està sortint un nou tipus d’universtiat americana:
Just as the late 19th century saw the rise of the modern research university (and its inverse, the liberal arts college), the early 21st century has witnessed the advent of a much more comprehensive institution – along with its mirror image, the fully online institution.
Financing this new kind of institution is extraordinarily complex, involving tuition and fees, cross-subsidies, philanthropy, grants, contract research, self-funded, stand-alone initiatives, profit-making ancillaries, borrowing, and patient, client, user and government funding.
Certament, les nostres universitats són més complexes que mai no han estat. El finançament ja no és pas només la subvenció de l’administració, o les matrícules dels estudiants. Prové de projectes de recerca, projectes de cooperació, etc… I les funcions van ampliant-se, també. Fins i tot penso a vegades que les universtiats fan coses perquè d’altres institucions públiques, que les haurien de fer, no les fan.
En tot cas, a la Universitat de Girona encara hi ha molt de camí per recórrer, i aquesta entrada de l’IHE proporciona algunes pistes per avançar. És clar que cal situar les idees en el marc europeu, on la primera missió de les universitats [públiques] és el servei a la societat, el servei públic.
