Weeknote WN202014 – enduriment

Avui és Ram, i és dia de donar tortell als fiols i fioles.

Què he vist a la xarxa?

Ask Slashdot: Should the Internet Be A Public Utility? de Slashdot comenta un altre article The coronavirus crisis proves the internet should be a public utility

The pandemic has illuminated the interconnectedness of everyone and everything. That’s why we’re staying inside and avoiding physical contact. Your ignorance of infectious disease could lead to my demise and vice versa. With no ill intent at all, your loveliest neighbor or a total stranger could put you in grave danger.

The Difference Between Emergency Remote Teaching and Online Learning

Well-planned online learning experiences are meaningfully different from courses offered online in response to a crisis or disaster. Colleges and universities working to maintain instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic should understand those differences when evaluating this emergency remote teaching.

The threat of COVID-19 has presented some unique challenges for institutions of higher education. All parties involved—students, faculty, and staff—are being asked to do extraordinary things regarding course delivery and learning that have not been seen on this scale in the lifetimes of anyone currently involved. Although this situation is stressful, when it is over, institutions will emerge with an opportunity to evaluate how well they were able to implement ERT to maintain continuity of instruction. It is important to avoid the temptation to equate ERT with online learning during those evaluations. With careful planning, officials at every campus can evaluate their efforts, allowing those involved to highlight strengths and identify weaknesses to be better prepared for future needs to implement ERT.

Progress toward offering an entire chemistry degree online has been slow because of chemistry’s reputation as a brick-and-mortar science, one that requires practitioners to roll up their sleeves and step up to a fume hood. The desire for hands-on labs makes offering an online chemistry degree hard.

What makes ASU’s new biochemistry program notable is that it moves beyond general chemistry. It’s the first full-fledged online chemistry degree. ASU has started with biochemistry rather than chemistry because fewer classes in the biochemistry major have lab requirements. It hopes to add a chemistry degree later.

ASU managed to construct its online biochemistry curriculum while dropping only one of the labs from the conventional organic lab class, a molecular model–building lab. The online students already did molecular modeling in the online lecture portion, so they don’t need that lab, Gould says. The rest of the labs can be done faster than in the conventional lab classes because there’s no downtime between sessions. Students can go straight from synthesizing to purifying and analyzing compounds.

Computació quàntica

A Slashdot s’hi diu que D-Wave Makes Its Quantum Computers Free To Anyone Working On Coronavirus Crisis – sembla que aquesta empresa posa a disposició dels investigadors el seu temps de càlcul, per estudiar la Covid-19.

D-Wave and its partners are hoping the free access to quantum processing resources and quantum expertise will help uncover solutions to the COVID-19 crisis. We asked the company if there were any specific use cases it is expecting to bear fruit. D-Wave listed analyzing new methods of diagnosis, modeling the spread of the virus, supply distribution, and pharmaceutical combinations. D-Wave CEO Alan Baratz added a few more to the list.

“The D-Wave system, by design, is particularly well-suited to solve a broad range of optimization problems, some of which could be relevant in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Baratz told VentureBeat. “Potential applications that could benefit from hybrid quantum/classical computing include drug discovery and interactions, epidemiological modeling, hospital logistics optimization, medical device and supply manufacturing optimization, and beyond.”
