From monday to wednesday (within 48 hours) Sheffield has witnessed IWMW2010 (Institutional Web Management Workshop 2010). The program of this event is really impressive: it combines aspects of institutional websites with subjects which are of interest for a research group, or which are even at the frontier of state-of-the-art development of Web 2.0. Actually, this workshop is entitled "The Web in Turbulent Times":
This year's event sees the Web Management community, like other in the HE sector, facing turbulent times: we have the uncertainty of the forthcoming general election, the implications of cuts across the public sector, the concerns raised by global warming and even, more recently the effect of erupting volcanoes on northern Europe.
Sessions have been broadcasted live, because it has behaved as an amplified event (see Slideshare channel), while participants have tweeted actively using hashtag #iwmw10. Two particular events I have actually followed live have been the opening and closing talks by Brian Kelly, the engine of UKOLN and author of the excellent and appealing blog UK Web Focus that I usually mention in my blogs. It is worth listening to his talks. Indeed, I must thank him for mentioning the University of Girona as one of the places that followed remotely IWMW2010.
I really think that this workshop brings about a key step towards the concept of University 2.0, which will not only push ahead a new way of teaching and learning, but will also drive the change towards a new organization and perception of Higher Education.
Following such a workshop, though, deserves thinking over it: from Girona, quite far from Sheffiled, I have had difficulties to follow the meeting. When ...

From 5 throgh 8 July we have organized the IX Girona Seminar, a scientific meeting organized by the Institute of Computational Chemistry of the University of Girona, that is held every two years in Girona. A few days ago we wrote a post in the #9gisem blogsite entitled The IX Girona Seminar, an amplified conference (note: posts in IQC's blog written in English can be listed with tag "eng"). That post contained out intentions towards amplifying the #9gisem for a broader audience, similar to what uses to happen for more social events like those related, e.g., to web 2.0.
Amplified events and conferences are a concept that is not new, but neither old at all. We must thank Brian Kelly for his nice posts on this subject, including recent ones a few days ago Having An Impact Through Wikipedia (rediscovering amplified events) and Amplified Events: Plans for #IWMW10.
Once the meeting has finished, it's time for evaluation of our goals. Among other minor things, we have posted at the IQC's Blogsite, both in English (for all attendants) but also in Catalan (for the local/regional audience):
-
Live interviews with key scientits (podcast)
-
Daily opinion by one of the organizers (podcast)
-
Overview of the poster session (podcast)
-
Photos
-
Local press review
-
Lectures were recorded and will be deposited at UdG's open digital repository.
-
Poster abstracts and poster pdf's will be provided.
-
Lecture presentations (if any) will be provided.
Not everyone agreed with the conditions to record and store in the Internet (cc-by-nd-nc license). Good wi-fi coverage was available. Notebooks (and possible cellphones) were mainly used to check e-mail and browse meeting and city information, in ...

Thanks to Brian Kelly I have realized that monday will see in Sheffield the start of the Institutional Web Management Workshop 2010 (IWMW2010), which represents a key step towards the concept of University 2.0, which in my opinion will not only push ahead a new way of teaching and learning, but will also drive the change toward a new organization and perception of Higher Education. I already noticed in the Media for Science Forum held last May in Madrid than English science and web communicators are quite ahead of us.
So from monday to wednesday I will try to follow this meeting through the Internet, while participating as much as I can. I really would have enjoyed attending it, but next week's Summer Course organized by the C4D prevents me to travel to England; furthermore, I have been heavily involved in two meetings on computational and theoretical chemistry.
Actually, I have already been noticed, because Girona is found at the geolocated tweet map of IWMW10 (I have just broken my norm on not geolocating tweets, but it made sense in this case, even more in such an important political day like today).
The program of the workshop is really interesting, for example
- The Web in Turbulent Times
- Are web managers still needed when everyone is a web ‘expert’?
- ‘So what do you do exactly?’ In challenging times justifying the roles of the web teams
- It’s all gone horribly wrong: disaster communication in a crisis
while it will end with conclusions by Brian Kelly, the dynamic engine moving blog UK Web Focus and member of UKOLN,
UKOLN is a research organisation that aims to inform practice and influence policy in the areas of: ...

Starting monday 5 july the iqc along with its science communication partner c4d will start the amplification of the IX Girona Seminar. The Girona Seminar is indeed a "hard science" meeting, where communication is held mainly with peers in theoretical chemistry. However, it is also interesting and socially necessary to address both other colleagues in Science and Society, to increase public awareness of Science.
We would like the meeting to benefit the community of researchers in this particular field of science. However, we would also like to benefit the community. Thus, we need the collaboration of participants and researchers which have not been able to participate, through blog posts and tweets, while increasing visiblity in social networks like Facebook. All in all, we need amplification.
What does amplification mean?
According to Allan Cho, there a few ways to amplify a meeting:
- Amplification of the audiences' voice: Audience members through the use of such social media technologies (such as Twitter) can create online discourse during the sessions in real-time
- Amplification of the speaker's talk: Widespread and inexpensive video and audio-conferencing technologies
- Amplification across time: With low-cost technologies, presentations are often made available after the event, with use of podcasting or videocasting technologies
- Amplification of the speaker's slides: With social media lightweight technologies, (such as Slideshare) entire presentations can simply be uploaded, shared, and embedded on other Web sites and commented upon
- Amplification of feedback to the speaker: Micro-blogging technologies (such as Twitter) are being used not only as for discourse and knowledge exchange among conference participants
- Amplification of collective memory: With the widespread availability of inexpensive digital cameras, photographs are often uploaded to popular photographic sharing services
- Amplification of the learning: With the Web resources and social media technologies, following links to resources and discourse about the points made by a speaker ...

I had to fight against mbox files, edit manually a couple of files, and use spreadsheet and database programs. But I was able to take a look at the evolution of the number of e-mails I sent and received along year 2009.
There is clearly a maximun of 90 messages received (not counting spam). One can also see the weekly pace, and also the downfall along August (also in Spring Vacation). All in all, 11573 messages received. I must admint that some of them correspond to newsletters, to Facebook comments or to direct messages or answers at Twitter. A reasonable estimate for them is 30%; however, all other have been read and processed, this is actually rellevant. Maybe there are some messages queued for processing yet (I rather follow the GTD /getting things done/method). Regardint sent messages, their number is indeed lower, but one must take into account that it is much faster to read someone else's message that to type a new one. Sent messages account to 3525, with a maximum of 36 in a given day.
I guess that the most important thing is the content of each message. My daily work. My actual, real blog.
My job as a university professor asks for a reasonably intense use of the Internet. Such a number of e-mails is sustainable; however, I must prevent it becoming unsustainable.
If I add Facebook miniconversations, tweets and phone calls, I would obtain a much higher number of communication items. Year 2010 seems to be even more interesting. I hope it does not become foolish.
